  For reference: I work in customer service/technical support. I called in just wanting to know if the insurance policy that was requested was the same as what was provided in the final documents. After I asked this and provided the required information, the lady on the phone pretended to put me on hold (I could clearly tell that I was not put on hold since I continued to hear background noises of her breathing and typing) and after the "hold" was over, kept saying "Hello? Can you hear me?" while I continued to respond "Yes I'm here, can you hear me?" and hearing an echo of myself saying this. From experience, I know that if you hear an echo from the customer's side, it means that the customers speaker is sounding loudly enough (and the delay was high enough) that you could hear yourself as long as the mic wasn't muted. I could hear every word I said (and she said). She could clearly hear me yet I clearly heard her switch to a nervous tone when I said "I can hear myself through your speaker" and she ended the call 3 seconds later. This repeated for second phone calls requesting the same information from a second number. I waited for the local office to close and then called corporate, who were able to provide the details I needed. Some advice for this local office: Teach your phone representative to just give it to the customer straight and advise them that you cannot provide the information they need, that they will need to call X to get that information. Do not EVER pretend that you can't hear the customer until its not your problem anymore.
