  We got the mortgage for our first house in the Bay Area through Robert Cohan at Carlyle and had a great experience. Our finances were not what traditional mortgage lenders are used to—Most of our assets were in locked-up equity compensation from a former company, and I was about to start a new job where my compensation was also mostly comprised of equity. We had already been turned down by another lender that wasn't willing to consider my entire compensation unless I had been at company two years. This is when I found Carlyle on the web and was able to arrange a call with Robert on a sunday night. He immediately understood my situation and was able to start the process with a lending bank the following day. Within 5 days, we got a pre-approval that accounted for my equity income and were able to submit an offer that was ultimately accepted. There were some limitations to going this route; we had only one choice of lending bank and they wanted a fair bit of financial documentation required. Robert and his team worked with us to ensure that all of our documentation was in the proper form, while at the same time explaining the usual mortgage mechanics such as rate lockup, points, and so forth. They also took care of scheduling the appraisal. Throughout this process, the team at Carlyle was very responsive over email and also through phone calls when we had more detailed questions.
