  As older buyers looking to relocate in Northfield, we were looking for a realtor who was local, independent, and involved in the community. Given that our retirement was on the line for the biggest investment we will make for the rest of our lives, we also wanted someone with integrity, detailed knowledge of construction techniques, and great communication. We found that and more in Pete Mergens. Quite simply, Pete is a great agent and an even better person. Although we had a limited budget, Pete treated us like millionaires. We knew we had found the right agent when at our very first meeting, Pete took most of an afternoon giving us a tour of the city as he explained the features of each neighborhood. With his knowledge of the city and local builders, he could give us the background of any house we pointed out. As Covid injected itself into the process, and the listings got tight, Pete deftly managed the showings in a way that showed he wasn’t just concerned about our health and safety but the health and safety of the people whose houses he was showing us. Through all this he was always knowledgeable and available. It got so after seeing a number of houses, we joked to Pete that he knew what we needed better than we did. This is the difference between an OK agent and a great one. One sees their listings as stuff to sell, the other is concerned with finding each client the best property for them. That is a very rare skill. It means getting to know each client as well as knowing not only the existing housing stock, but what might come on the market. Once we found the house we wanted, Pete proved to be as masterful at negotiating as he was at finding the right place. It is totally due to his talents that we not only got the place we wanted but at a price our new neighbors are telling us was a steal. One final plus about Pete is his involvement in the community. He is, of course, quite modest about this, but if you do your research, you will see there is not an area of Northfield life that he is not involved in. Look and see which realtors sponsor various local events, look at which agents are involved in activities like youth coaching. Why is this important in an agent? Because someone who cares about their community cares about you.
